Seagate FreeAgent Theater+

Today I went to Bestbuy with an urge to spend on some tech. Well, I decided that I would give the Seagate FreeAgent Theater+ a try. The idea is that I would keep a copy of all our digitized media on a FreeAgent USB drive and then have a small form factor media center for our travels...anywhere even in the van. In the past I was doing this with a legacy Xbox, USB drive, and laptop. Much too heavy to carry anywhere efficiently.

I also wanted to view media from the network when the device was at home. Here is how I got the device to play media from the network:

1. Update your firmware
2. On the home screen click Devices
3. Select Network
4. Select My_shortcuts
5. Press the i button on the remote
6. Choose add
7. Add the user, password, and IP address of the media server

I will add more once I have put the device through more use.

No Man or Woman Needed

I saw a post on www.drudgereport.com tonight about advancements in researching stem cells leading scientists into a new realm of sperm and egg creation. Apparently, scientists have found a way to create sperm and egg from stem cells without the need for a man or woman.

Aticle: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-1223617/No-men-OR-women-needed-artificial-sperm-eggs-created-time.html

Just hours before I read the article, I happened to be watching an Alabama Public Television broadcast about Tulips. I didn't realize his description of life before angiosperms would link to an idea about what scientists are doing with human sperm and eggs today. In a nutshell, the specialist described life before angiosperms as dull as a result of reproduction being a form of "cloning" or "replication". Later, he described the importance of angiosperm replication as being "colorful" and "advanced". The reason is because angiosperms replicated by sex (pollination), which provided for more differences from the mixing of many RNA.

How does this link to the human sperm and egg research from stem cells?

For me, it means that we are serious about cloning as a mechanism of reproduction. The process of sex and variations in RNA could start to compete with cloning and in my opinion might mean that future generations could have fewer individual characteristics because of the reduced RNA mixing. Or, in other words, a possible world lacking individuality or variation (boring).

Father's Day

Woke up this morning @ 3:00 AM with Lauren. Fed her a 4 oz. bottle, changed her diaper, and put her back to be. Slept till about 7:30 AM when I was awoken by Amy and the kids singing "Happy Father's Day to you..." and a tray full of breakfast comfort food (not of the healthy kind). The cinnamon flavored cream of wheat was only the icing on top! 8)~

I also opened some gifts including an alarm weather radio and a replacement XBox 360 since all of my repair attempts on the old one work for about 2 hours. I think Mel had the most fun with my gifts! Don't get me wrong I love the 360 in all of it's high-resolution glory, but I cannot take my mind off fixing the old one. After all, it is only PCB, solder, and other electronic components. I am going to try one more fix before I giveup (reflow fix).

Anyway, I also went to Lowes today and picked up three ceiling fans and some lighting accessories. Migrated the two white fans downstairs into the upstairs bedrooms to help cool upstairs of the afternoon warmth. The kitchen and den look much better with ornamental ceiling fans instead of the plain white fans.

Lauren is a bit fussy tonight. We think she might be cutting a tooth or fighting an ear infection. I might be up more later, but I hope not. The last couple of nights I was able to get approximately 6 hours of consecutive sleep.

Laters!

Something Like That

Amy and I watched Australia tonight. A good movie with a decent story. What I take from the movie is the cruelty of war. Regardless of what side you are on, war results in the loss of LIFE. I do not agree with killing no matter what! In the end, nothing can justify the loss of innocence.

Travels to Albany, GA

Following the wonderful story telling of my brother's blog (http://coloradocarp.blogspot.com/), I am posting my last trip to Albany, GA. Not as glorious as weathering pristine mother nature in search of the best catch, my trip was to install a new phone system for our client. A 4-hour drive from Birmingham, AL to Albany, GA and a great opportunity to listen to tunes, think, and miss that which is most important to me.

While I was there, I found out more about the city of Albany, the correct pronunciation of Albany (All-ban-e), and that one year the city was ranked number 1 in homicides per capita. Besides implementing new Juniper POE switches and a Shoretel phone system parallel to a Cisco phone system and Cisco data switches, my other job was to ensure that we didn't "lolly gag" walking to and from our cars and to just stay in our hotel room. I was not comforted in Albany at all and the city's history raised my desire to get home soon.

The install went well except for a few hangups with the communication between the Cisco and Juniper data switches. However, my ride home was not as well. I was stopped in a country area for speeding. Thankfully, the officer only clocked me at 74 mph because I did manage to slow it down a bit before the radar took a reading. Anyway, I was looking back quite a bit after that and my trip took longer! 8)

I am just glad to be home!

Painful, Yet Funny

Abby decided to cut her hair and it was butchery. Mel and I were playing Lego Batman on the Wii and Amy was down in the basement looking for business cards. Abby alone, ventured into the kitchen desk drawer and plotted. Abby’s plan was to raise Mom and Dad’s attention by chopping hairs as close to the scalp and at angles impossible to disguise. The effect was long-term and emotional.
At first, Mom was surprised, sobbing, and then angered. As for me, what is all of the noise, arrgg, then OH Sugar Honey Iced Tea! Why would Abby mutilate her beautiful hair? This question is easy to answer if you are Abby, but not so if you are the parents. Abby is only three, so I am not too worried. If Abby is cutting her hair similarly in 14 years…help me Lord! Anyway, pictures will seal this into digital history and we will dust off the cobwebs for her wedding video.

Affirmation of Values (Part I)

Today, I am affirming of my core values. These core values are who and what I am...what I have learned in the last 32 years. I understand that my core values may not be accepted by many people. Fortunately, I believe in a free society, which allows me to establish my core values today and discuss in more detail my values in subsequent posts. Without further delay, I believe in:

Jesus Christ
Life
Family
Charity
Freedom
Peace
Fun
Hard work
Responsibility
Health

This is not an exhaustive list and some values may fall from the list as I grow mentally, religiously, and professionally. After all, "People grow through experience if they meet life honestly and courageously. This is how character is built" - Eleanor Roosevelt.

Regards,

Way
